Romero Britto

Romero Britto

Romero Britto (born October 6, 1963 in Recife) is a Brazilian neo-pop artist, painter, sculptor, and screenprinter. His work features elements of cubism, pop art, and graffiti.

After settling in Miami, Britto worked on the streets of Coconut Grove, becoming well-known in the community. He has painted portraits of Roger Federer, Dustin Hoffman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Jordan, Gloria Estefan, Andre Agassi, Eileen Guggenheim, David Rockefeller, Senator Ted Kennedy, and many other figures from the worlds of business, politics, and entertainment.

Brito has been making waves on the international art scene since 1989, when Absolut commissioned him to design the bottle label for an advertising campaign. Soon after the Absolut campaign, Britto's whimsical, cartoonish style was sought after by major corporations to create large murals, sculptures, and product logos around the world. He has recently received commissions from companies such as Disney and Evian.

Britto has been named Ambassador for the Arts for the State of Florida. In 2004, his sculpture Welcome, the world's largest aluminum sculpture, was exhibited at Miami's Dadeland Station.

Romero's monumental sculpture opened the 40th anniversary of the Montreux Jazz Festival. The portrait of legendary art dealer and founder of Art Basel, Ernst Beyeler, now hangs at the Fondation Beyeler, the Swiss museum that also houses works by Klee, Cézanne, Picasso, Monet, Matisse, and Giacometti.

Britto's work has appeared in numerous publications around the world. Britto not only paints on canvas, but has also designed logos, furniture, and costumes. He recently designed the costumes for Super Bowl XLVI.
